How To Prevent Cataract In Old Age

The lens in the eyeball becomes cloudy, from transparent to opaque, blocking lights into eyes and affecting vision, which is called cataract. In the beginning, slight turbidity won’t affect vision, and then gradually get worse and cause complications such as glaucoma or phacoanaphylactic endophthalmitis, finally it will affect vision or even cause blindness.

Cataracts have two types: congenital and acquired. The most common is senile cataract. People will develop cataract around 50 years old, caused by lens degeneration. Both eyes can have this disease successively or at the same time. Cataract existing after birth or in childhood is called congenital cataract. Ocular opacity caused by eye trauma is called traumatic cataract. Diabetes and insufficient parathyroid function can cause metabolic cataracts. Diseases such as inflammation and bleeding in the eye can cause concurrent cataracts.

To prevent it, old people should take following steps.

    1. Keep good and comfortable moods and avoid violent mood swings.

    2. Quit smoking early. Experiments have shown smokers have more chance to develop cataract.

    3. Pay attention to eye hygiene and keep good eye habits. Do not use your eyes too long, pay attention to combination of work and rest. Ocular tissue of the elderly have lower resistance to infection, you should timely prevent and treat eye infections. Bacterial and viral infections occur easily in autumn. If not treated in time, it will cause vision loss.

    4. Pay attention to the proper light. Too strong light and too weak light can cause eye fatigue too. Ultraviolet light is easy to damage eyesight, so you must prevent direct sunlight and protect your eyes as much as possible when you go out. You can wear dark glasses or sun hats when you go out to avoid eye damage.

    5. Elderly people with cataracts should avoid smoking, alcohol and spicy and greasy food. To prevent increasing intraocular tension, you should eat more foods rich in vitamin E and vitamin B1, such as egg yolk, vegetable oil, soybean, lean pork and other food. Increase vitamin C intake, such as lemon, orange, apple, cherry, kiwi, spinach, broccoli, cabbage, etc.

    6. Replenish water in time. If the body lacks water, normal metabolism will be disordered, which will cause some chemicals damaged the lens and caused or aggravated cataracts.

    7. Check the fundus regularly. The elderly should have eye examinations every six months to help find cataracts early.
