presbyopia

Presbyopia, also known as age-related myopia, is a physiological phenomenon, not a pathological condition or ametropia. It is a visual problem that inevitably occurs as people enter middle age and old age. It is one of the signals that the body is beginning to age. As people age, the lens of the eye gradually hardens and thickens, and the accommodative power of the eye muscles also decreases, leading to reduced zooming ability.

Therefore, when looking at close objects, the image cannot be fully focused when projected onto the retina, making distant objects appear blurry. The occurrence and development of presbyopia are directly related to age. It mostly appears after the age of 45, and its occurrence and severity are also related to other factors, such as previous ametropia, height, reading habits, lighting, and overall health status.

Even with careful eye care, the degree of presbyopia will increase with age, generally increasing by 50 degrees every 5 years. According to the correspondence table between age and the degree of presbyopia, for most people with good refractive conditions, that is, without myopia or hyperopia, the degree of presbyopia is usually 100 degrees at the age of 45, increasing to 200 degrees at the age of 55, and reaching 250 to 300 degrees around the age of 60.

After that, the degree of presbyopia generally does not increase further.
